Read, Read, Read All About ItOne semester down, one more semester to go! I am sure by now everyone is talking about the exciting trip with friends to Miami that they are going on over Spring Break. Don't be discouraged if you haven't got anything booked and your plans are to do some serious R & R in the comfort of your own home. I have a little something to make your time a little bit more enjoyable: the perfect spring read.
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou is an autobiography that recounts her life through the age of 17 and the various struggles she faced living in the South. There is a focus on important themes that we still face today: identity, racism, gender, and family which contributes to the significance and importance of this book. More importantly, it was Angelou's journey to find her strength through her voice. As a black woman, it is easy to fade to the background and think that your silence is necessary for the success of your community. However, it is my belief that your voice is what is necessary for your survival. You are in control in your own destiny and you are going to face certain struggles, but its not the struggles that characterize who you are, its the way in which you react to these struggles and grow from them. I hope this book helps you find your strength in your voice, because what you say is important and it matters. |
