Tissues for the Before, During, and After
I am sure you've been told countless times to watch your emotions because they can be mistaken as weakness or aggression. However, going to college can be emotionally draining for both you and your parents. With that being said, I give you a box of tissue. You're welcome to get the rectangular or the cube box , but stay away from the to go packages of tissues because I promise it won't be enough.
It won't be enough to catch the tears that fall when its time to say goodbye once your all moved in. It wont be enough to catch the tears that fall that first night when you realize you're on your own. It won't be enough to catch the tears that fall after you have your first phone call home following a long first day off classes.
Brittney Cooper so thoughtfully said,
"To be Black is to grow up in a world where white feelings can become dangerous weapons...my approach to life is to view feelings as employees that can't be trusted-which to say, my feelings are subject to intense micromanagement...I set up strict parameters and rules about how they should be engaged, the lines they can't cross, and I am quick to put my feelings in a time out when I feel they are getting out of hand" (Eloquent Rage, "Never Scared," 204).
You see, as black women, we are taught to be strong and unwavering in our strength so this tissue box can be used to block anyone from seeing the other side. You cannot allow your emotions to run high, to avoid giving others have the opportunity to judge and evaluate your worth based on your moment of weakness.
You are strong, you can do this, I believe in you.
